Mat Single T Comedy does it again!
Comedians Colin Burgess, Shaun Murphy and Dan Viola filled the Bartlett Country Club with hysterical laughter last Saturday
At a practically sold-out show on Saturday, three comics took the stage to show Olean a good time in the third showcase for Mat Single T Comedy.
An hour before the show started, the Bartlett Country Club was already packed, but people continued to smush themselves in to hear if the comedians could give them a giggle … and let me tell you, they did more than that.
The first act, Colin Burgess, was a good opener. He started the crowd off with some laughs, but the next comedian really got the crowd going.
Shaun Murphy, of Buffalo, N.Y., working as a comedian for five years took the stage next for a 15-minute set. For the amount of time he had he really blew the crowd away. Within only a few short minutes, Murphy stunned some of the audience with his dirty jokes. Or, as it was for one woman, a little confusing if you didn’t know the terminology. Murphy also made quite a few of the girls jealous with his super-low BMI status. This comedian definitely knew how to get the crowd riled up for the headliner comedian, Dan Viola.
Viola, of Rochester, N.Y., wowed the crowd with his clean, and even area-related, jokes. Viola teased the crowd about many different parts of the Olean area. He really did his research on all things Olean. Picking on Olean anywhere from St. Bonaventure to St. Bonaventure basketball to all the “things to do” in the area and much more.
Viola threw in some jokes about local New York politics and even White House politics. And of course, the always funny (especially to us youngins) elderly jokes about some of Bartlett’s finest attendees being in the civil war and founders of the club.
With Viola’s chuckle-rearing movements, he reminds you of Jim Carry from Liar Liar. Viola originally started out as a comedian out of college for three years but took a “13-year hiatus” only to return to comedy six years ago. But now with seven children, four under the age of 7, and teaching full-time in Rochester, Viola uses the little flexibility he has to do stand-up comedy for area venues.
As his career is back on the upswing, Viola hopes to do more and more shows and hit 100 this year.
Getting most of his jokes from the day-to-day things he sees as a parent and a citizen, most of his jokes are a product of high pressure + sleep depravation, Viola said. And even though it might take longer to come up with his ideas, Viola makes sure that he gets his laughs in a clean way. “I want to tell jokes that are respectable,” Viola said.
Mat Single T Comedy put on a great showcase that will only continue to be better on February 19 when comedian/magician Brian Miller, along with Dan Fisher, come to the Bartlett Club for another great night of laughs.
