Jamestown, NY –Wreath-making at the Audubon Center and Sanctuary’s Homemade Holidays was so popular last year that they expanded and improved it for this year’s event!
On Saturday, December 4, 2010, from 10 am to 3 pm you can learn how to make a wreath, make a bow, and actually make both to take home. You can also learn about evergreens—which ones are local and which ones are good for wreaths.
Audubon provides the wreath frame, the greens, natural decorations, and the ribbon for bows. All you have to bring is yourself. Workshops are about a half hour and are taught by staff and Master Gardeners. After the workshop, you’ll move to a room with all the supplies you’ll need to finish your wreath.
Workshop times are 10:00, 10:45, and 11:30 in the morning and 12:45, 1:30, and 2:15 in the afternoon. Workshops are limited to 18 people each, so get there early to get a spot in your desired workshop.
There will also be information available on the different types of Christmas trees, the age-old faux vs. real tree debate, how to make other greenery decorations, sources for local trees, and planting instructions if you want to grow your own greens. It promises to be a great day of holiday fun!
Bring the family, for there will be some simple, kid-friendly ornaments, and you can make gifts for neighbors and friends as well. Homemade Holidays is a wonderful way to get into the holiday spirit in a local, sustainable, and money-saving way.
Workshops with a wreath cost $20 for non-members, $17 for members. Call (716) 569-2345 for a reservation by the end of the day on Wednesday, December 1, and you’ll get a $5 discount. Donations are appreciated for ornaments.
The Jamestown Audubon Center and Sanctuary is at 1600 Riverside Road, off of Route 62 between Jamestown and Warren.
Audubon’s winter hours are 10 am-4:30 pm Mondays and Saturdays, Sundays 1-4:30 pm. The trails and Bald Eagle viewing are open dawn to dusk every day.
