The Cattaraugus County Arts Council and Jamestown Community College present the Center Gallery’s opening reception for Leah Yerpe’s “Lost in Space: the Ambiguities of Life and Art” exhibition. The November 5, 2010 opening reception will be held at the Center Gallery located on the second floor in the College Center, Cattaraugus County Campus, Olean, NY.  The reception begins at 6 p.m. and includes hors d’oeuvres and wine tasting. A brief artist talk begins at 6:30 p.m.

Anne Conroy-Baiter, Executive Director of the Cattaraugus County Arts Council commented, "The floating figures in Yerpe's paintings evoke slow motion dreams and fantasies. Yerpe's spare use of color and the deeply intimate way in which she portrays expression and emotion are moving to witness. We're very excited to have an artist of her caliber in the Center Gallery, especially since she got her start at JCC."

Yerpe explains: “Contradiction is the foundation of my figurative art...A subtle violence comes into my work, and I am able to explore the binary oppositions of seduction/repulsion, intimacy/depersonalization, and heaven/earth. An important part of the human condition is a desire for resolution, for a way to put the incongruities of life into order…The work challenges, defies, and troubles me. And that is why I make it.

Yerpe is a Cattaraugus County native and received an M.F.A. in painting/drawing from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY in 2009; a BFA from SUNY Fredonia (Summa Cum Laude), and an A.S. degree in Art: Studio Art from JCC. She has exhibited in numerous New York City locations including The Loom, Brooklyn Waterfront (best of show), Pratt Studios Gallery, Pratt Manhattan Gallery, Lucky Gallery, Steuben South Gallery, Aswoon Gallery, and Steuben East Gallery. Western New York and PA exhibitions include the Erie Art Museum; Rockefeller Arts Center, SUNY Fredonia, Adams Art Gallery, Westfield, NY, Emmitt Christian Gallery, Fredonia.

The exhibition runs from November 5 to December 10 in the Center Gallery. Hours: Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
