Artists, adventure, and fun are hallmarks of the annual open studio event

Now in its fourth year, Routes to Art (RTA) is an annual, self-guided, open-studio artists’ tour taking place in various locations across Cattaraugus County and the Seneca Nation. Anne Conroy-Baiter, Executive Director of the Cattaraugus County Arts Council (CCAC), said, “Visitors can use the Routes to Art brochure/map and website to plan a day or weekend of touring studios to see artists at work. Roughly half are Seneca Nation of Indians artists, so it’s really a cross-cultural program with a lot of educational components within Seneca art.”

Terry Saye a wood turning artist of Bemus Point, is a first-time RTA participant. He said, “I was encouraged by other artist-members of the Cattaraugus County Arts Council to participate. I am excited to be displaying with Sean Huntington, whose tree paintings are wonderful, and a good match with my wooden bowls and other items. I am looking forward to networking with other artists and meeting people who appreciate fine art.” Saye creates artistic pieces out of burls, irregular growths on tree trunks with unusual grain patterns. Huntington and Saye will be exhibiting at The Tamarack Club at the Holiday Valley Resort in Ellicottville.

Hayden Haynes, from Kill Buck and another artist new to RTA, gets his inspiration from animals, nature and his Native American heritage. He carves his pieces out of bone, antlers and soapstone. “I always try to push myself to create harder pieces and try new things,” he said. “I hope the visitors to my studio will understand that for most artists, including myself, there is a strong connection to the artist and art they create; you put yourself into the work you create.”

With 43 participants, it’s virtually impossible to see all the artists on RTA weekend, so the public is encouraged to pay a visit to the Routes to Art Exhibition at JCC’s Center Gallery in Olean, on display until May 14. The exhibition is a great way to see a representation of all the artists in one location and help you plan your trip based on the artwork that attracts you.

Conroy-Baiter said, “The best way to plan your RTA experience is by picking up a brochure. They have been distributed all over Ellicottville, Allegany, Olean and other locations. You can also request one online at www.routestoart.com or pick one up at the Arts Council at 100 W Main St. in Allegany.” The brochure provides all the information you need, including a detailed map and description of each artist’s work.

Elliott Hutton, owner of Hog-Shed Studio Pottery in Little Valley, creates high-fired, functional stoneware pottery and sculpture. She said, “From the start, RTA has been successful in making people aware of the wonderful talents of artists across Cattaraugus County, and providing a driving adventure for those who appreciate high quality visual art.” Hutton is one of the founding members of RTA and has participated since its first year in 2008. She said, “It is greatly satisfying work, … realizing that what I create with my hands will eventually find its way into peoples’ homes, adding some essential beauty to their lives. It is that personal connection that adds joy to the work I do in clay.”

New this year – Friday night preview hours on May 20 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A symbol in the brochure and on the website indicates which artists are participating in the preview hours. Conroy-Baiter said CCAC received feedback from visitors and decided to add an additional evening as a fun way to start the weekend. Each year, the RTA tour evolves into a uniquely enjoyable experience. Since about one-third of the artists are new to RTA, get ready for the ultimate artistic road trip.
