On January 29, 2011 Strikeforce, a Mixed Martial Arts promotional company held another successful event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California.
The main card featured two Strikeforce title fights, and both reigning champions walked away with their belts still in hand in a night that showcased some of MMA’s best talent.
Strikeforce 170 pound Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz (24-7, 1 NC) defeated Strikeforce Women’s Champion Cris Cyborg’s husband, Brazilian Evangelista Cyborg (18-14) by arm-bar submission in 4:50 of round two. This was Diaz’s second chance at defending his belt.
Also televised on Showtime was the fight between Strikeforce 185 pound Middleweight Champion Jacare Souza (14-2, 1 NC) and MMA legend “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler (18-7, 1 NC). Lawler, who is known for his heavy hands and knockout power unfortunately couldn’t manage to end Souza before he was submitted in 2:00 of round three of Souza’s first title defense.
Football star turned Mixed Martial artist, Herschel Walker (2-0) continued his winning streak on Saturday by defeating heavyweight Scott Carson (4-2) by technical knockout due to strikes in round one. As a newcomer to the sport of MMA, Walker showed a lot of talent with his striking and wrestling abilities that Carson just couldn’t hold up against.
MMA’s favorite family also took away another win this weekend as Roger Gracie (4-0) showcased his family’s BJJ skills by submitting former South African national wrestling champion Trevor Prangley (23-7-1) at 205 pounds. Prangley was defeated by submission to a rear-naked choke at the end of round one.
