"The Rite" Leads in Box Office Sales
"The Rite" tops the box office this weekend; should it top your list?
Director Mikael Håfström’s newest film, “The Rite,” appears to be preordained to top the box office charts this weekend. Told in the vein of “The Exorcist” and “The Exorcism of Emily Rose,” “The Rite” is also based on a true story, this time loosely on the nonfiction book of the same name by Matt Baglio. But does the movie live up to all the hype? And more importantly, does it live up to its predecessors?
The film stars Colin O’Donoghue as Michael Kovac, a mortician’s son who decides to go into a seminary in order to escape the life he seems destined to lead. Kovak remains a skeptic throughout his education, and when it comes time for him to take his vows, he decides that he does not have sufficient faith to dedicate his life to God and church. He attempts to inform one of his instructors, Father Matthews, of his decision, who tells him of a new initiative by the Vatican to install an exorcist in every diocese. He convinces Kovac to attend a sort of training program in Rome, stating, “Two months in Rome, how bad could it be?”
Now, if you’re asking yourself, “What about Anthony Hopkins?” don’t worry, I was, too. Hopkins, who stars as one of the Vatican’s most prominent exorcists, doesn’t even make an appearance for at least the first half an hour or forty-five minutes.
His new instructor at the Vatican is Father Xavier, who recognizes Kovac’s lack of faith and sends him to Father Lucas (Hopkins), one of the church’s chief exorcists, to find out exactly ‘how bad’ it can be.
Kovac pals around with Lucas for a while, and Lucas takes him under his wing, revealing evidence of the dark forces that are at work. Kovac rejects Lucas’ assertions; when the girl they are exorcising begins to spit up nails, Kovac still won’t go for the fact that she has been possessed… and these aren’t your typical drywall nails; these are some seriously masochistic crucifixion nails. No matter what the evidence is that Lucas presents to him, Kovac continually rejects the fact that anyone could be possessed. And that’s when things get… interesting.
The problem I had is that too much weight is placed on O’Donoghue’s shoulders. Håfström attempts to provide a back-story for Kovac that will make the audience sympathize with him, but instead he ends up with a bunch of half-baked details and loose threads that don’t seem to really substantiate Kovac as a character.
Supposedly, Kovac’s relationship with his father is shaky, but it doesn’t really become clear until another character tells us that. He has a girlfriend at the start of the film, but we only get to see her for a few brief moments and never get to know her. Both of these relationships become important later on, but our understanding of them is too limited for us to care or understand what Kovac’s feelings really are. O’Donoghue, while not a terrible actor by any means, can’t carry the depth his character requires, and as a result he pales in comparison to Hopkins.
When the exorcisms do start, the effects are fantastic, but don’t hope for any edge-of-your-seat horror. This movie is more of a thriller, and besides a couple cheap, loud noises to scare the audience, there isn’t much that’s truly frightening about “The Rite.” If you’re looking for spooky things crawling out of the woodwork, or “spinning heads [and] pea soup,” as Lucas says, this movie might not be your thing. Things do pick up very well towards the end of the film, and there are a few pretty big twists that allow for some very fulfilling sequences.
One other thing: there is a brief moment where “The Rite” gets a little bit preachy towards the end. While the plot of the film necessitates this circumstance, it happens at the most climactic moment, and it almost totally ruined it for me. If I was looking for a sermon, I would have went to church, not to a movie that I thought would leave me feeling dirty for a week.
